Working on this project was a fantastic experience. Our team was approached by Energy Safety Canada to create an animated re-creation of the events that led to an oil and gas worker’s accident.
This project was quite challenging because the video needed to be 12 minutes long, and we had limited resources and a tight timeline for the animation. My first task was to take the e-learning documentation provided by the Instructional Designer and transform it into a visual script for the animation. I made sure to focus on storytelling while maintaining the educational value for the viewer.
We custom-built all the 3D models based on photographs provided by the client from the work site. We conducted extensive research on how the equipment worked to ensure accuracy when rigging.
The technical aspects of the project were complex, especially with concerns about render times and issues with the Arnold render engine. We decided to use real-time rendering in Unreal, which we were more familiar with, to ensure we could meet our deadlines.
The clients were pleased with the project, and it even won a 2022 Gold Telly Award for Fully Animated – Non Broadcast.
